LIST PICK

ALEXANDER TELLER I GOT FREE

Our favourite snake oil seller, Alexander Teller, is back with yet another stonking tune of List Pick proportions. ‘I Got Free’ follows those unmissable introductory songs ‘A Cigarette That Never Goes Out’ and ‘It Couldn’t Be You’, and even more importantly it’s the last single we’ll be hearing from Teller’s debut EP before the full record drops, so that’s exciting, isn’t it? ‘I Got Free’ is a piece of well-paced storytelling that delivers each purposeful line tainted with equal measures sarcasm and vulnerability over a driving indie-rock rhythm. There’s certainly something of the New Romantic movement within those melancholic tones sitting upon earnest pop melodies, proving the old adage that sometimes less is indeed more. As Teller puts it, “It’s easier to make a 7 minute earnest epic than it is to make a pop single that actually means something.” Here, the introspective songwriter continues: “Turns out all I had to do was throw in some weird lyrics and a synth and It became my own. Complete with a slightly pretentious joke involving the French word for orgasm, it’s right up my street. For all that, it’s my biggest triumph of the record. I’ve never made something so simple that feels like me.” So clap your ears on this one and put your eyes somewhere on the internet to look out for the imminent release of Alexander Teller Is A Snake Oil Seller EP. - Hannah Thacker   [Photo credit: Ricardo Fusetti]
